Wales is to make it easier to instal solar panel and wind turbines in Welsh homes.

The Assembly Government aims to reduce the need for planning permission for such equipment, helping people and local communities to tackle climate change.

Minister for Environment, Sustainability and Housing, Jane Davidson, said today:

"Achieving sustainable energy production and consumption is key to tackling climate change, which is my number one priority.

"I am putting forward these proposals to lift any potential barriers to allow for greater micro-generation in Wales."

Views are being sought on proposed amendments to regulations for domestic properties. The changes would mean
planning permission would not be needed for micro-generation equipment unless the proposals were of a scale or type that would have a clear impact beyond the householder’s own property.

Micro-generation refers to small-scale energy generation equipment, including solar (thermal and photovoltaic) panels, small wind turbines, and ground heat sources.

The Town and Country Planning (General Permitted Development) Order 1995 sets out rules on whether planning permission is needed. These rules are being reviewed in light of developing technology.
