Police warn of internet scam

16/8/2007

Gwent police tonight urged members of the public to ensure they do not give personal details out or hand over money to any organisation without checking if they are legitimate.

If follows a case where a man was sent an e-mail claiming he had won a new car and requested money to release the prize, but it was found to be a scam.

Police say t is very unlikely that reputable companies would ask customers to confirm details via the internet for security reasons. It is also unlikely that a reputable company would use free, anonymous e-mail accounts such as yahoo and hotmail.

If anyone receives suspicious e-mails such as this they should report them to police on 01633 838 111 so the matter can be investigated.
