Don't say dot.com, say dot.Cym

29/6/2008

Plaid Cymru AM Bethan Jenkins has said that the "dotCYM" domain name for Wales is a step closer to becoming reality. She spoke after an announcement by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

The board of ICANN yesterday approved a recommendation that could see a whole range of new names introduced to the internet addressing system.

South Wales West AM Bethan Jenkins said: "This announcement could, in effect, pave the way for the dotCYM domain name to be used for Welsh website addresses. It's important that the world has access to everything that Wales has to offer and I believe that a dot CYM web address would be one way of achieving this.

"It would be an excellent tool in promoting Welsh events both to communities in Wales and abroad. It would open up new opportunities for Welsh-based businesses.

"I am delighted with the ICANN decision. I will be raising this issue with Rhodri Glyn Thomas, the Minister for Culture, at the earliest opportunity possible to see how we can take this forward."
