Cosmonauts Come to Cardiff 6/3/2003
To celebrate National Science Week, Russian cosmonauts Alexander Volkov and Alexander Martynov will talk about their adventures in space and life on board orbital space stations including MIR, at the Reardon Smith Theatre, National Museum & Gallery this Saturday, 8 March, at 12.30pm.
Colonel Alexander Volkov graduated from the High Military Aviation School in 1970. The most highly decorated cosmonaut in Russia, the cosmonaut-researcher has conducted several research programmes on board several space flights, and worked as the Commander of the Cosmonauts Team at the Cosmonauts Training Center 1991-1998, a post once held by Yuri Gagarin, the first man in space. He now lectures on the need for international cooperation in space initiatives.
Dr Alexander Martynov, the Director of Ballistics Department at Mission Control Centre from 1968-1992, was directly responsible for landing space vehicles on the Moon, Mars, and Venus as well as the safe return of manned spacecraft to Earth. He is the chief of Foreign Relations Department for the administration of Korolev since 1994 and is the author of 120 scientific articles and 6 books dedicated to spacecraft motion control in planetary atmospheres.
