London monument to Welsh poet and forger

12/10/2006

A monument dedicated to Welsh poet and forger Iolo Morganwg, who created the first ceremony of the Druids of the Bards of the Isles of Britain at Primrose Hill in London in 1792, is to be placed at Primrose Hill next year.

Iolo Morganwg, or Edward Williams, spent his working life as a stonemason. It is as Iolo Morganwg that he is remembered, chiefly for his role in (re)creating modern bardic ritual and philosophy. He founded the first Gorsedd, Gorsedd Beirdd Ynys Prydain, at a ceremony in 1792 at Primrose Hill.

He also wrote substantial works (most of which are now considered forgeries) claiming that the ancient druidic tradition had survived intact in Wales, despite the Roman conquest, Christianity, the persecution of the bards under Elizabeth Tudor, and other adversities.

He was addicted to laudanum for most of his life, which may have affected his mental condition.

Plans for the monument were unveiled at a reception in the House of Commons. Sponsor and member of the planning team, Elfyn Llwyd, Member of Parliament for Meirionnydd Nant Conwy said:

"The history between Wales and London has been intertwined over the centuries, and in paying tribute to this significant romantic poet, and his contribution to Welsh life and culture, is something of which we can be proud. I am delighted that the Royal Parks have granted permission for the go ahead of this project.

"Iolo Morganwg was part of the radical romantic movement, he knew Coleridge and Blake, and of course the event has formed a key part of Welsh heritage as we know it today."

The world class sculptor John Meirion Morris will design the monument of Welsh slate with an embossed face of Iolo Morganwg, and the famous calligrapher, Ieuan Rees, will write the words of dedication on the stone.
Mr Morris commented:

"It is a privilege to be asked to design such a monument, and to bring a piece of Wales to the very spot that Iolo gathered the first meeting of the Welsh Druids. Iolo was a genius and it is only right that he is to be honoured in one of the most beautiful spots in London."
