5,000 mile trip to propose 13/8/2007
Love was in the air at the University of Glamorgan when the boyfriend of a summer school student flew in from Florida to propose.
A student at the University of South Florida, Bonnie Matthews, 21, is taking part in a Summer Seminar at Glamorgan’s Business School.
Her long term boyfriend Adam Hazell, 22, flew to Wales from Tampa in Florida to propose to her on the Treforest campus.
Bonnie studies marketing at university while Adam is an Information Technology Management student. Both will graduate in May next year.
The bride-to-be said, “Adam took me totally by surprise when he proposed, and I was really thrilled. I said yes immediately. We haven’t set a date for the wedding yet, we’ll probably wait about a year”
Adam said, “I was very nervous when I proposed, but I did think she would say yes. It’s not every day you fly five thousand miles to ask somebody to marry you”.
The University of South Florida (USF) Summer Seminar has been running at the University of Glamorgan for ten years.
Bob Morgan who coordinates the partnership at Glamorgan said,
“The summer programme at Glamorgan started because of the close match between the two universities’ business schools, both having strengths in the field of economic development. I have also taught on their equivalent programme in Tampa.
“The students who come to Glamorgan get classes on the Welsh economy and on the theories of economic development. To make the theory come alive we visit high tech. companies in the area, and the students get to meet the senior people in the companies.
"This year we visited GE Healthcare, GE Aero Systems, Technium, Cardiff Bay, Bosch.”
