New special school for Anglesey

26/7/2010

Isle of Anglesey County Council has welcomed news of a successful bid for grant funding to build a new school.

The Welsh Assembly Government’s Department for Children, Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills has agreed, in principle, to contribute £7.6million towards the construction of a new state of the art special school for the Isle of Anglesey.

The current school - Ysgol y Bont - is located on the Parc Bryn Cefni Industrial Estate, and was constructed in the early 1970s. Ysgol y Bont currently caters for more than 70 pupils with learning difficulties and disabilities,

The preferred site for the new construction is the Ysgol Gyfun Llangefni and Plas Arthur campus, and consultation on this particular option is currently under way.

Head of Education Service, Gwyn Parri, said, “We are extremely pleased to have received this funding approval in principle. Submitting the proposal to the Assembly was a demanding exercise that involved the support of a number of departments within the Council, and I am grateful to colleagues for their contributions.

“If we are able to adhere to our planned schedule, the new school should open its doors in September 2013.”
