New vice chancellor at Bangor University 4/6/2004
The University of Wales, Bangor today (4 June 2004), announced the appointment of Professor Merfyn Jones as its next Vice-Chancellor. He will succeed Professor Roy Evans, CBE who retires in 4 months time, but will take up the duties of Vice-Chancellor from 1 August 2004. Professor Jones will be only the sixth Vice-Chancellor of the University on its 120-year history.
A native of Gwynedd, Merfyn Jones joined the University of Wales, Bangor in 1990 as a Senior Lecturer in History, after having served as a lecturer, Head of Department and Dean at the University of Liverpool. He became Head of the School of Welsh History in 1993, and was appointed to the Chair in Welsh History in 1994. he served as Dean of Arts and Social Sciences for two years before being appointed Pro-Vice Chancellor- the position he currently holds- in 1998. From September to November 2003 he served as Acting Vice-Chancellor.
Merfyn Jones is a well-known and prolific historian, his main interests centering on modern and contemporary Wales. He has made numerous television documentaries, and received a BAFTA (Cymru) award in 2000 for outstanding contribution to history on television. In 2003 he was appointed to the Board of Governors of the BBC and was a member of the Nominations Committee established recently to appoint the new Director General of the BBC.
Professor Jones said: "It is an enormous pleasure, but also a great responsibility, to become the University of Wales, Bangor's Vice-Chancellor. These are challenging times for higher education but Bangor is an excellent University with brilliant staff and students and I shall do whatever I can to ensure a successful future for all of us."
