Going bats in Llanberis

3/4/2008

Bat detectors which give people the chance to hear the creatures' high frequency sounds with their own ears will be used on a bat walk held in Llanberis on April 16.

There are 17 different bat species in the UK and a number of them, such as the common and soprano pipistrelle, long eared, daubenton and the rare lesser horseshoe bats, are all present in and around the Llanberis area.

People interested in learning more about these night creatures and seeing them are invited to Natur Gwynedd's bat walk held in Llanberis on April 16, meeting outside Pete's Eats at 8pm on Llanberis High Street .

Bryn Griffiths, Gwynedd Council Biodiversity Officer said: "We are eager for anyone with an interest in wildlife to come along and enjoy this special walk in Llanberis. There will be a unique opportunity to use bat detectors which give you the chance to hear the bat's high frequency sounds with your own ears, so why not put your name down for the walk. All are welcome."

Experienced bat workers will be leading the walk and they will be available to answer any questions you may have.

"These events are part of a wider programme of events, funded by the Countryside Council for Wales, to raise awareness of locally important wildlife here in Gwynedd," added Bryn.

"With experienced bat workers on hand, it will be a great chance to get to know the unusual lifestyle of bats - such as, why they hibernate and which bats hang upside down. If you're curious for such answers then why not come along and enjoy the walk."

Although no strenuous walking will be involved, shoes suitable for walking on uneven ground, waterproof clothing and a torch are recommended. Children must be accompanied by an adult, and the event should last around an hour and a half. Wheelchair users are advised to contact in advance.

Spaces are limited so please book in advance by contacting Bryn Griffiths, on 01286 679381 by e-mailing: bioamrywiaeth@gwynedd.gov.uk or you can also visit www.gwynedd.gov.uk/biodiversity to see other events held by the Natur Gwynedd Partnership.
