Porthcawl flood risk eased

31/10/2008

Dwr Cymru Welsh Water will start work next week on a 1.4 million pound scheme to improve the performance of the wastewater network in Porthcawl.

The scheme will involve the replacement of 750 metres of sewers, and will increase capacity on the network as well as reduce the risk of internal flooding to properties during storm weather conditions.

Work is due to begin on November 3 and expected to be completed by the end of Easter 2009. It is anticipated the scheme will be completed before the tourist season begins again next spring.

The first phase of work will take place along Esplanade Avenue from Esplanade to Blundell Avenue between 3rd November and 17th December, and along Esplanade from the junction of Picton Avenue to Esplanade Avenue between 3rd November and 17th December.

Dwr Cymru Welsh Water delivery manager Martin Kilroy said: “This scheme in Porthcawl is just one of many where we are upgrading and developing our wastewater network to cope with increased demands placed upon it. The scheme is essential to help us deliver improvements to customers by alleviating their homes from the risk of internal flooding.

“We would like to take the opportunity to apologise in advance for any inconvenience this work may cause and to assure residents and businesses that we will do our very best to keep disruption to a minimum,” he added.

Welsh Water has liaised closely with the local highways authority to put in place a rolling programme of work which will have the least impact on traffic management. “There will be the need for traffic lights but we will be letting residents and businesses know where and when these will be in place,” added Mr Kilroy.

Contract partners, Morrison Construction will deliver the refurbishment scheme on behalf of Dwr Cymru Welsh Water.

A separate Welsh Water scheme is currently being carried out in Porthcawl, to replace the sea outfall at Seafront Beach. Although the concrete outfall pipe still operates as it should, structural wear and tear has meant the work is needed to safeguard public health and safety.

This work is being carried out by contract partners Kelda, and is expected to be completed by March 2009.
