New strategy for Severn Estuary 19/12/2001
A strategy has been published to help ensure the Severn Estuary achieves sustainable development, with its balance between the economic, social and environmental interests.
The Strategy for the Severn Estuary and its bilingual summary outline the aims and principles of the Severn Estuary Partnership and the benefits of the Partnership process.
They cover a wide range of issues and opportunities and have been developed to provide detailed justification for an integrated and co-operative approach to action on the Severn Estuary - involving all users, cross sectoral, statutory and non-statutory bodies and commercial organisations.
A series of estuary-wide policies contained in the documents. If followed, these should lead to more sustainable management practice on the Estuary. Lists of Œproposals for action‚ illustrate how the policies can be implemented and a section on the way forward explains how the Partnership intends to implement the Strategy.
“The Severn Estuary Strategy is a prime example of what can be achieved when a broad range of authorities, agencies and the public work together. I look forward to this co-operative approach continuing as we implement the Strategy for the benefit of all who live and work around the Estuary,” said George Ashworth, Chairman of the Severn Estuary Partnership and Head of Planning at Monmouth County Council.
The Severn Estuary, Môr Hafren in Welsh, is one of the largest estuaries in Britain. It is internationally recognised for nature conservation, has major industries and ports sited around its shores, and attracts several million visitors each year to a variety of tourist attractions. Given the diversity and intensity of uses around the estuary, it is crucial that a balance is achieved between economic, social and environmental interests and that demands on the Estuary are carefully managed.
The Strategy has been published by the Severn Estuary Partnership (SEP) which is a voluntary and independent estuary-wide organisation with a Secretariat currently based at Cardiff University. It is a partnership of all organisations and individuals, which have declared an interest in caring for the Estuary and want to encourage a more co- ordinated approach between organisations/agencies and their management activities.
It is intended that the Strategy for the Severn Estuary will provide a catalyst for an integrated and co-operative approach to the Estuary‚s management. The lists of Œproposals for action‚ include many ideas for joint, collaborative actions and should stimulate discussion of actions and the production of estuary-wide action plans.
