Welsh film group in worldâ's first sun powered cinema multiplex

28/7/2005

Powered only by the energies of the sun and the wind, next week a Swansea charity will showcase eight hours of short films and animations in UKâ's largest environmental festival.

The story began last year when talent spotters attended the BeyondTV film festival in Swansea. Amazed by the professional show put on by the mostly volunteer crew from Undercurrents, the talent spotters from the Big Green Gathering snapped up the chance to include the show in their popular festival which attracts more than 20,000 people.

Undercurrents will be heading to Somerset on Wednesday to begin five days of showcasing the best work of grassroots filmmakers from Wales and beyond. Hosting their cinema in a unique geodesic dome, the power will be supplied through a series of mobile solar panels and wind turbines.

Paul O'Connor from Undercurrents said today, "The Undercurrents cinema will be a working example of the possibilities of using renewable energy. By using our imaginations we can operate DVD players, video projectors, PA systems and lights in a field without mainline electricity. We are proving that we can move away from burning oil and coal to supply our needs and find alternatives. This cinema will be a great working example."

Undercurrents will be joining many other groups from across the UK in the Alternative Media And Renewable Energies (AMARE) area of the Big Green Gathering. The festival runs from Wednesday August 3-7th near Cheddar.

The festival details can be found on www.big-green-gathering.com
