League table for Welsh MPs 6/2/2003
A league table of Welsh MPs contributions in the House of Commons shows that eighteen of the twenty-six non-ministerial Welsh MPs have made less than ten speeches in the main chamber of the House of Commons since the 2001 General Election.
Three Welsh Labour MPs have spoken less than ten times in total in the main chamber, including questions, speeches and interventions.
At the top of the league, Simon Thomas, the Plaid Cymru MP for Ceredigion, has made forty-eight speeches in the House of Commons, and one hundred and eighty seven contributions in the main chamber.
At the bottom is Labour’s Martin Caton, MP for Gower, who made three speeches in the House of Commons, and eight speeches in the main chamber.
During the period monitored - Plaid Cymru MPs averaged 32 speeches per person in the main chamber of the House of Commons; Liberal Democrats averaged 25.5 speeches per person; Labour averaged 9.88 speeches per person. Westminster Hall speeches averaged: Plaid Cymru 11 per person, Liberal Democrats 3, Labour 2.27
Total contribution in the main chamber of the House of Commons averaged - Plaid Cymru: 118.25 per person; Liberal Democrats: 107.5 per person and Labour 45.88 per person
The statistics were gathered by Plaid Cymru from the Parliamentary Online Indexing Service (POLIS). All statistics relate to the period from Parliamentary Session 01-03 (From general Election 2001 until end of January 2003).
