Invitation to explore Wales’ nature reserves 14/12/2001
National nature reserves - Wales' greatest natural assets - are seen in all their glory in a series of new leaflets, designed to help visitors and locals enjoy these very special places.
The Countryside Council for Wales has published the three new colourful leaflets giving details of 23 of Wales' most popular and easily visited National Nature Reserves in north, mid & south east Wales and south west Wales.
Paul Loveluck, CCW's Chief Executive said: "We want people from all walks of life to visit and enjoy Wales' National Nature Reserves. The Welsh are rightly proud of their natural heritage and the reserves are places where we can see that heritage at its very best. CCW aims to improve interpretation at nature reserves to enhance the experience of the visitor and in so doing to encourage more visitors to benefit the tourism industry and the Welsh economy."
There are 65 National Nature Reserves throughout Wales, chosen because of their exceptional wildlife habitats, fascinating geological features and great natural beauty. They represent Welsh countryside and coast at its very best - reflecting the quality and diversity that 's found here in Wales.
Information in the leaflets includes the wildlife and habitats that can be enjoyed in the reserves. There is also a map and access information for each reserve.
The National Nature Reserves include:
* Y Berwyn - Wales's largest heather moor;
* Cader Idris - the legendary Chair of Idris in southern Snowdonia;
* Cwm Idwal - Snowdonia at it most spectacular;
* Craig Cerrig-gleisiad a Fan frynych - back to the Ice Age, high in the Brecon Beacons;
* Kenfig Dunes - the lake in the dunes, not far from Porthcawl;
* Crymlyn Bog - a natural oasis in Swansea's industrial landscape;
* Skomer Island - a bird-watcher's paradise in Pembrokeshire.
The leaflets are available from local Tourist Information Centre or can be sent to you if you call CCW on 01248 385500.
