Captain Cook's ship comes to Cardiff 21/10/2002
A replica of Captain Cook’s ship, Endeavour, which recently appeared on BBC 2 in the reality programme ‘The Ship’, is coming to Cardiff Bay this winter.
Fresh from its voyage re-tracing six weeks of Captain Cook’s epic journey of discovery to Australia, Endeavour will be sailing into the Bay at the invitation of the Cardiff Harbour Authority.
The ship will be moored in the Graving Docks, alongside Techniquest, where it will be open to the public from Saturday 14 December 2002 until Wednesday 1 January 2003 inclusive.
During this time, visitors can experience life on board the 18th century vessel, getting the opportunity to stand at the helm of this great ship and marvel at the towering masts.
They can also visit the crew’s sleeping quarters strewn with hammocks and wonder at the frugal delights of the galley.
From Monday 6 January to Sunday 16 March 2003, Endeavour will undergo a major re-fit. During this 10-week period, marquees will be erected on the dockside to hold special exhibitions of the work being done to the ship.
Members of ship’s crew will be on hand to speak to visitors and demonstrate all the ship’s re-fit activities such as splicing, rope twisting and knotting, re-rigging, sail repair and traditional carpentry but for safety reasons the public will not be allowed on board.
For its final week in Cardiff Bay the ship will be re-opened to the public and will be leaving the Bay on 24 March 2003.
The original Endeavour, one of the most famous British ships of discovery, embarked on her first voyage in 1768 captained by Lt James Cook.
This voyage of exploration and scientific investigation to the East Coast of Australia took over three years to complete and was followed by a number of other famous explorations to places such as Tahiti, and Botany Bay.
The ship will be open every day 14 December-1 January from 9.00am with last admission at 5.00pm. Ticket prices for boarding ship: Adults £7.00, Senior Citizens/Disabled £5.00, Children £4.00, Families £18.00.
The tented exhibition will be open every day 6 January-17 March from 10.00am with last admission at 3.00pm. Tickets are sold at half price for this period.
