Cardiff transport partnership moves forward
26/4/2004
Cardiff has taken another step forward in its bid to find a partner for the city's innovative transportation vision.
A white paper was issued in May 2003 unveiling plans to develop a modern integrated network giving Cardiff an urban transport system that ranks amongst the best in the world.
Proposals include the completion of the "Missing Link" of the Peripheral Distributor Road i.e. the Eastern Bay Link, to divert traffic away from the city centre and allow public transport improvements to be implemented on Newport Road; significant improvements to the core bus network in the City Centre and Radial routes, extra park and ride sites plus walking and cycling schemes.
Over the past 12 months, the council has been driving forward the establishment of a public-private partnership to fund the estimated £400m required to deliver these proposed schemes.
Preliminary invitations to tender were invited from a number of high profile consortia in November 2003.
Submissions have now been evaluated and shortlisted by the council and three private sector bidders, namely AWG, Babtie-Macquarie Bank and Capita-Mowlem will be retained through the next phase of the procurement, which is due to be completed next year.
