Historic day for rail in the Vale 4/5/2004
Passenger trains will run on the Vale of Glamorgan Line for the first time since the Beeching cuts in 1964, it has been confirmed.
Network Rail is to begin work on upgrading the line in June, thanks to funding from the Welsh Assembly Government.
Economic Development and Transport Minister Andrew Davies described the scheme as an important milestone in the Welsh Assembly Government’s drive to ensure a sound and efficient transport infrastructure for Wales.
"Rail transport is a good, sustainable form of travel, especially in areas where there is a lot of commuter traffic. The improvements will also help integrate the rail network with Cardiff International Airport. This is very good news for the Vale of Glamorgan and Wales as a whole."
Work begins this summer on the Barry Town to Bridgend railway line. Contracts are in place for the scheme, which includes the construction of new stations at Llantwit Major and Rhoose (for Cardiff International Airport) together with a new bay platform at Bridgend. Additional signalling will be provided to increase the capacity of the route and the track will be upgraded to allow trains to travel at higher speeds than the present track permits.
Work starts this June and it is anticipated the new passenger service, to be operated by Arriva Trains Wales, will commence in spring 2005.
