From groundbreaking work in antimatter research and nanotechnology, to incredible revelations about climate change and advances in medicine, Swansea University has contributed greatly to the advancement of knowledge and our understanding of the world in which we live. A new publication profiling some of the world-class research activity at the will have its Welsh launch tomorrow ) Wednesday 15 November.) University Vice-ChancellorProfessor Richard B Davies will unveil the 238-page research review, entitled Breakthrough, at the Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff Bay . And Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research, Professor Nigel Weatherill, will give an overview of research activity underway at a number of Swansea academic Schools. Breakthrough documents the breadth and depth of the University’s recent research achievements and it also demonstrates the wide range of commercial and industrial partners which the University works with, including Airbus, CERN, Corus, Ericsson, Exxon Mobil, IBM, Microsoft, Motorola, Rolls Royce, Sony, and Toyota. Professor Davies said: “ Swansea University has many long-standing research strengths that are widely recognised, and the University is several years into an ambitious strategic plan aiming for world-class research excellence in all our activities.†“Recent highlights have included several large research initiatives such as the £50 million Institute of Life Science ; the £30 million Institute of Advanced Telecommunications ; the Multidisciplinary Nanotechnology Centre; the Institute of Environmental Sustainability ; the Centre for Sustainable Aquaculture Research and the Institute for Health Research.†“Breakthrough seeks to capture the breadth, quality and – hopefully – the excitement of the innovative research now underway at Swansea . “ Professor Nigel Weatherill, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research), added: “There is a real sense of expectation on campus; a real sense that Swansea ’s research makes a difference. The conditions are right, the foundations for real growth laid, and the research climate at the University is nurturing genuine talent that will unquestionably lead to profound discoveries, new applications and revolutionary concepts.†“The same passion that drove Newton , Darwin , Curie, Edison, and Einstein drives discovery here at Swansea . We are justifiably proud of what we have achieved so far, but I have no doubt that we have a great deal more to offer and that our best is yet to come.†For further information about research at Swansea University , please visit http://www.swansea.ac.uk/research
