From John Jenkins.
I wish to clarify the situation surrounding your report on my resignation as the Welsh Conservative Party's candidate for Llanelli at the last Assembly Elections.
Firstly, I wish to make clear that the views that were attributed to me were not my own views. I was contributing to a debate on www.conservativesintouch.com
I understand that a member of the Liberal Democrats who frequents the aforementioned site passed on the information to a Liberal Democrat researcher in Wales who then passed the scoop onto Martin Shipton of the Western Mail. I wish to make it clear that a lot of selective editing was carried out somewhere between my actual comments being made and the reporting of my remarks in the Western Main and subsequently the BBC.
The views attributed to me are not my own and I wish to state that I have been maliciously misquoted. I am not homophobic. I am not racist and I am not a bigot.
I wish to make it clear that the reasons for my resignation as the Welsh Conservative Party's National Assembly for Wales candidate were because my insensitive handing of politically sensitive subjects such as asylum, homosexuality and race and because it was clear that the media were going to use this story to attack the Welsh Conservative Party and myself with. The wording and method of making these remarks was stupid and irresponsible.
I also would like to state that I have always sought to conduct myself in a manner becoming of an individual who represents a political party either as an officer or candidate for public office. My naive use of the Internet in thinking that it could be used as a forum detached from the reality of life does highlight my inexperience.
I hope that you will accept this account of events, which I would like to place on record.
