Newport highlights beauties of River Usk 14/11/2006
Roadside panels explaining the environmental importance of the River Usk are to be unveiled in Newport tomorrow.
The panels, next to the new footbridge, will be unveiled by the Mayor of Newport, Coun Miqdad Al-Nuaimi, and the chairman of Wildlife in Newport Group , Mr Roger James.
The cabinet member for community safety and sustainability, Councillor Ray Truman, explained: “The panels will focus on the plants and animals that thrive along the River Usk.
“The purpose of the panels is to draw the public’s attention to the increasing opportunities they have to access and enjoy this unique wildlife resource, right at the heart of the city.â€
The initiative is part of the countryside service commitment to raising awareness of the countryside in the heart of the city.
Councillor Truman added: “I would like to thank Alfred McAlpine Plc, which has sponsored the panels, and encourage as many local people as possible to take advantage of this valuable information source.â€
The panel on the eastern bank of the River Usk will be unveiled at 10am, and that on the western bank at 10.15am.
